Eid ul fitr around the world

 





Eid is a Holiday after one month of fasting in Ramadan. However, some differences in festivities can be observed from country to country.


Turkey



 On the occasion of Eid Fitr, the minarets of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul are illuminated by Istanbul Metropolitan.

There is a three-day holiday on the occasion of Eid.

Eid-ul-Fitr is called Seçar Bayram or Ramzan Bayram.

On the day of Eid, after the Eid prayer, people go to visit the graves of their relatives.

At that time, religious books, incense sticks, rose water, candles, and flower shops sat around the cemetery.

On Eid-ul-Fitr, children wear new Eid clothes and go to each neighbor's house to greet Bayram.

Instead, they get money, candy, chocolate, traditional sweets - baklava, Turkish Delight, which are very similar to western Halloween trick and treat.

Elderly people are also visited casually and their hands are kissed and placed on their foreheads.

During Eid some people decorate their homes with candy themed balloons and paper decorations.

Sufi dance and Sufi music are organized at night. And shadow puppet theater.

Southeast Asia

 Eid-ul-Fitr is called Hari Raya Puasa. Sometime it's called Lebaran.

Everyone exchanged greetings while saying Selamat Hari Raya.

There are seven days off in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and one day in Singapore during Eid.

During this time, people leave the city and go to the village to celebrate Eid with their relatives, which is called Muddiq.

On the eve of Eid, pelita and panjut are lit in the courtyard.

The house is decorated with ketupak made of paper and cloth.

Preparations are made to prepare dishes called ketupak and lemang.

Rice wrapped in ketupak palm leaves and rice cooked in lemang bamboo.

On the day of Eid, they wear traditional clothes. On this day, an open house is held at home, so that anyone can come as a guest.

A variety of feasts are arranged for the guests. They include beef rengdang, chicken rengdang, apor ayam, ketupak, lemang, longtong, sayur ladeh.

Along with a variety of sweets - dodol, anpan, kue lapis, cake lapis, chiffon  Cakes, Fruit Cakes, Kuih Kering, Pineapple Tart or nastar, Kastengel, Putri Salju, Chocolate Conflex Cookies, Chocolate Chips Cookies, Rainbow cat toung Cookies, Suji Cookies, Caterpillar Cookies, Sagu Cookies, Butter cookie or biscuit samprit, Hari Raya Theme Sugar Cookies are available.

Elders present money to children in green envelopes called "Duet Raya".

Meanwhile, the children play various Malay and Indonesian traditional games with their friends.

At this time, the custom of Halal B Halal is observed.

Hari Raya is wished to all the elders of one's workplace, neighborhood and relatives and forgiveness is sought for past offenses committed against them. Forgiveness strengthens relationships.

Egypt

In Egypt, Eid starts with Eid prayers. After that, everyone exchanges Eid greetings and says Eid Mubarak.

On this day, cookie like betitfour, khak, mammol, sesame lace cookies, Peanut lace cookie, Almond lace cookies, cakes like butter pound cake, fruit cake, cream cake and coffee are arranged for the guests.They come to visit different guests at home.

This day is a very happy day for children. They collect Idah or some money from elders.

With this Idah money, they buy various toys, balloons, buy candy and chocolates, ride on various rides. There are toy shops, chocolate and candy shops, balloons and various rides on the streets.

Children ride around on decorated bicycles on this day.

The streets of Cairo are full of children walking.

Iran

In Iran, Eid is celebrated as a family holiday.Eid al-Fitr is called Eida Fetra.

Giving is seen as most important.

During this time, people donate Fitra which is donated to the imam of the mosque before the Eid prayer.

Later it is donated to the poor by the mosque. Eid begins with the Eid prayer.

After that, they come home and eat various sweets called halva, sheer beranji, sole Zarde.

There is no grandeur on the day of Eid in Iran. Eid is celebrated in an informal way.

Nigeria

Eid is called Small Salah. Everyone exchange greetings with each other called Baraka de Salah.

Before Eid, people go home to celebrate Eid with their relatives. At this time, there is a traffic jam on the road.

On the day of Eid everyone wears traditional clothes of bright colors.

Adults give children money in colorful envelopes.

Children love to play tops and fly kites while adults play board games called Mankala or Manchala which is also called Ayo.

In Nigeria, people have dinner with traditional food on Eid day.

In which jollaf rice, beef stew, fufu, chicken stew, boiled black beans, fried Plantains, tuyon shinkafa (rice pudding) with ginger, green chillies, sugar, coconut, rice powder and soda water mixed drink is eaten.


middle east

Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan wear their traditional clothes on Eid.

Eid starts with the Eid prayer. After the prayer, the children are given money, candy, chocolate in beautiful baskets.

On the occasion of Eid, the traditional sweets of Arabia - Khak, Mammol, Basbusa, Bakalava, Turkish Delight, Kanafe, Umm Ali are prepared.

And various chocolates, candies, cans of juice and cold drinks, packets of chips are also arranged.

On the day of Eid, many people organize parties at home to which relatives are invited.

Everyone eats different foods and spends time by chatting. There are pinatas, various games, puppet show, various rides- slide, swing, pony horse, bounce for children.

Some organize a gift exchange at the party.

Apart from this, the prices of the tickets in the entertainment center - Zoos, Theme Park, Museum are discounted on the occasion of Eid.

So that children can go there and have fun. These entertainment centers are crowded during this time.

morocco

 The day of Eid begins with the Eid prayer. After the prayer, they come home and eat delicious food.

The day of Eid is celebrated here with family style.

The elders give money to the children. In the afternoon, the guests come home some times.

The guests are entertained with various cakes, cookies and coffee. If the guests do not come, they themselves have afternoon breakfast with these cakes, cookies and coffee. Eidul Fitr is called Eid El Saghir.

Lebanon

Houses are decorated on the occasion of Eid. Children are given gifts wrapped in colorful paper.

And delicious food is eaten. Meals are arranged on well-decorated tables.

There are also party crackers on the table, which the children happily crack.

Sugar-coated almonds, mammol, khak, biscuits au chocolate, ghorabia, kakel-like cookies, kanafe, roast lamb, talibbush salad, lebanese pilaf, fattos salad are in the arrangement.

Some also organize various games and rides for children.

Many concerts and theaters are organized during Eid. There are many places where there are photo exhibitions.

South Asia

Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated for three days in Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka.

During this time, people leave the city and go to the village to celebrate Eid with their relatives. During Eid, all relatives and friends come together. 

The night before Eid is called Chandraat. On Chandraat girls put mehndi or henna on their hands.

Apart from this, preparations for Eid are going on - decorating the house, advance preparations for Eid cooking. Takbeer is heard on the day before Eid.

Which is organized in open ground. Many places organize takbeer followed by playing Islamic songs.

Which is usually sung by children playing the tambourine or Duff. Many arrange to listen to takbeer and Islamic songs in their homes.

On the morning of Eid, one bathes with fragrant soap and wears new clothes. Then perfume is applied.

Eid prayers go to the mosque. Eid starts with the Eid prayers. After the prayers, greetings are exchanged saying Eid Mubarak.

Then come home and eat delicious food. For Eid, special food is organized for morning, noon and afternoon.

Which is according to the culture of the respective country.

Sherkurma or milk vermicelli, mithi sevai or dry sweet vermicelli, kheer or payesh (Rice pudding), Shahi Tukda or double ka mitha(Bread pudding), Khubani ka mitha(Apricot pudding),Zarda (orange flavour saffron sweet rice),Gajar or carrots halwa, semolina milk halwa are the most popular among them.

Various Pithas can be seen in different regions of Bangladesh.

Apart from this, Jatinur cake, Shinga, Nankhatai, Chanachur,Samosa, Shingara, Sandesh,Bora,Pakora are popular in Bangladesh.

Idiyapam and vegetable and chicken stew are eaten in South India. Watalapam in Sri Lanka.

Polao or rice pilaf, korma - kalia,Halim ,Nihari,Luchi ,Roti,Paratha are also prepare.

In this way, there is a difference in food from country to country. At night, usually the food left over from morning, afternoon and noon is eaten.

On Eid, the elders give money to the children, which is called Eidi, selami or bakhshis.

In the village, children play various traditional games like kite flying, topa game, native football, native cricket or danguli or gilli danda, native badminton, yoyo, flying stick etc. However, it is not seen in the city.

In the village, men pass the time by playing a mixture of cards and board games called Tashra. However, according to Islamic rules, games are played without money.

During Eid, houses are decorated with banana tree gates and triangular paper fringes, balloons, lantern lights or fanoos, electric lamps, paper decor, banners, fresh flowers towards the village.

And Alpana is painted in the courtyard of the house. Pelitas and  diyas are lit around.

But these are not seen in the city.

After the Eid prayers in the city, many people sleep at home. The commercial touch of western festivals has come to Eid in the city these days.

Many people celebrate Ramadan and Eid with splendor and joy. Ramadan and Eid theme decorations, religious songs played by Qawwali and Dafli, Eid gifts wrapped in colorful paper, Sufi dance, Tashra games and various food and drinks.

But the practice is not seen much except among urban upper middle class or urban rich.

The women of the village do housework till the afternoon and spend the evening gossiping. They also sing various religious songs. In addition to the religious words, they have their own happy and sad stories.

In addition, women also play Tashra games.

During Eid, people donate Zakat and Fitr to the poor.

Many films are released on Eid in India. Which people go and watch. Many people from other communities too.

Sudanese people buy new clothes on Eid. Before Eid, they make various cakes and cookies.

Houses are decorated with lanterns on the occasion of Ramadan. Many also repaint their houses.

On the eve of Eid, girls give henna on their hands.

Eid is spent by going from house to house and exchanging various gifts.

Guests are entertained with cakes, cookies, candies, chocolates and fresh fruits.

Children are gifted money by elders in beautiful envelopes.

When guests go to someone's house, they take gifts like candy, cookies, cakes, chocolates in beautiful baskets.

Tanzania

New clothes are bought during Eid. Houses are decorated on the occasion of Eid.

And delicious cakes, biscuits are made. Special food is organized during Eid which is taken after Eid prayers.

Adults give money to children as gifts. Children enjoy going to the park. They ride various rides.

Teenagers enjoy dancing and singing in the streets.

Central Asia

Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan have three days of public holiday during Eid.

Eid is called Ramadan Hait or Roza Hait in Uzbekistan, Idil Ramozan in Tajikistan, Ramzan Bayram in Turkmenistan and Ozara Eid or Ozro Eid in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Toys are bought for children.

After the Eid prayers, a delicious breakfast is served. People are invited.

Various cakes, biscuits, pastries, fresh fruits, chocolate, candy, chips, dry fruits, cold dry fruits and cans and packets of juice, local food - chakhchak, kushtil, baursaki are arranged for breakfast. There is also tea.

Children receive gifts of toys, chocolates, candies and some money from adults.

Islamic music called JaramZan is performed by playing the tambourine or Duff in exchange for money or cookies.

Besides, people pass the time by playing Kardi. However, according to religious rules, the game is played without money.

Bosnia

New clothes are worn on the day of Eid. Eid is called Ramzan Bayram.

Children go to each neighbor's house and exchange Eid greetings and in return they get money, candy, chocolate.

On this day breakfast is done with traditional food.

Cabbage stuffed meat, Bosnian vegetable hotpot, kebab, dolma, baklava, tufahish (apple pie), rujika, halva are on offer.

Eid is celebrated here for three days.

On the second day of Eid, the graves of close relatives are visited in the cemetery.

The third day is a party with relatives and friends.

On this day, delicious food and Islamic music are organized. Various games - secret gift exchange, Islamic board games such as - Quran challenge are played.

In many regions, Eid is also celebrated on the fourth day, which is called Eid for women. Women spend time for themselves.

Tunisia

Eid is celebrated for three days. During this time houses are decorated and cakes, cookies, candies, chocolates, traditional sweet baklava, marzipan are bought from shops.

At this time, there is a crowd from the shopping mall to the neighborhood shops. On the occasion of Eid, the shopping mall offers discounts on various home decoration items, toys, gift items, sweets.

Children are given toys during Eid. Adults also give each other various gifts.

During this time, close relatives are invited to the house. Various delicious food is arranged.

At the end of the meal, many organize dances or distribute gifts.
